Sandakan Mee
If you cannot go to Sandakan (the town in Sabah where there WERE a lot of balak and night clubs) to eat Sandakan mee, this is the next best place to find Sandakan mee outside of Sandakan. In Sandakan, they call it "Dan Kung Meen" (say it in Cantonese please, as Cantonese is the dialect of choice in Sandakan). "Dan Kung Meen" means "coil spring noodles", literally which suggests that the noodle is springy to the bite. In Sandakan, we have "Dan Kung Meen" that really are so springy you have to have steel teeth to gnash through (I kid you not here) ... Yours truly had mild indigestion after that meal ... :( ... but that's another story.
Note: So far I have mentioned Sandakan 7 times even before I get to the Mee blog...coz I'm from Sandakan lor!
The Sandakan mee sold here in Ah Lap BBQ Meat which is housed inside Kedai Kopi K.S. has a nice springy and firm bite to it. Coupled with the slightly sweetish but not oily sauce, and a variety of meats such as Char Siew, Siew Yuk (BBQ pork) and the Hakka Jar Yuk, the combination is so good to the last spring(y) mee.
In short, it's good and it's worth going there from 6am to 11am or 12pm.
Go to Lot2-0 Taman Cantek, Lorong Rampai, Kota Kinabalu. Call Ah Lap BBQ Meat at 019 862 1668 for directions.
